Agrarian reform may cover thousands of hectares of land thru passage of Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill

Thousands of lands may be covered by agrarian reform if House Bill No. 555 or the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill will be passed into law.

Secretary Rafael Mariano said, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) is continuously receiving petitions of land holding that may possibly be subject to agrarian reform even if the issuance of notice-of-coverage or NOC had lapse in June 2014.

The NOC is the first step for a land to be covered by the agrarian reform that would be extended thru HB 555.

The secretary says, more potential land may be distributed to benificiaries especially in Negros, Region 8, Isabela, Cagayan, Bicol, Southern Mindanao, Tarlac, Pampanga and Palawan.

There are more than 4.7 million hectares of land already distributed to almost 3 million beneficiaries under the agrarian reform.

While more than 600,000 hectares which are mostly sugar cane field and coconut farms are yet to be distributed.

“DAR will cover all holdings and land that may cover by agrarian reform,” Mariano assured.

The Presidential Agrarian Reform Council will hold its first meeting on August 22 to be presided by the President to tackle DAR programs. — Rey Pelayo / UNTV News & Rescue
